The Ordos Regulation on the Governance of the Kubuqi Desert and Mu Us Sandy Land will take effect on Aug 1, providing a stronger legal framework for ecological restoration and desertification control in the city.
The regulation was announced by the Standing Committee of the Ordos Municipal People's Congress at a press conference on June 2. Comprising six chapters and 39 articles, it covers desert and sandy land management, resource utilization, conservation measures, and legal responsibilities.
Designed to address local challenges in combating desertification, the regulation strengthens incentives for farmers and herders to participate in sand control efforts by clarifying legal participation channels and benefit-sharing mechanisms. Officials said the measure will help align ecological restoration with rural income growth.
To consolidate restoration achievements, the regulation prohibits activities that damage vegetation and fragile desert ecosystems, including grazing in designated restoration areas.
Authorities said the new rules will enhance the long-term effectiveness of ecological management and support the sustainable development of the Kubuqi Desert and Mu Us Sandy Land.
