A major step in scientific collaboration between China and Pakistan was taken with the launch of a joint herbal medicine research laboratory in Ningbo.
New International Research Platform Unveiled
The Zhejiang–Pakistan Joint Laboratory on R&D of Herbal Medicine was officially unveiled during the 2026 International Symposium on Traditional Chinese Medicine–Unani Medicine Cooperation. Additionally, the platform has been approved as a provincial-level international science and technology cooperation initiative.
Joint Academic and Institutional Collaboration
The laboratory is built on cooperation between Chinese institutions such as Ningbo University and Pakistani research bodies including the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences at the University of Karachi and the University of Lahore. Moreover, it brings together researchers from multiple disciplines, including medicine, chemistry, artificial intelligence, and pharmaceutical sciences.
Leadership and Research Structure
Professors from both countries lead the initiative jointly. In particular, Chinese Academy of Sciences member Zhao Yufen chairs the academic committee, while Professor Liu Xinmin and Professor Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary serve as Chinese and Pakistani directors respectively. This structure ensures balanced scientific coordination between both sides.
Focus on Drug Development and Regulation
The laboratory will focus on preclinical and clinical research in traditional medicine, product registration, and talent development. In addition, it will support academic exchange programs and regulatory research to improve international standards.
Broader Multilateral Cooperation
Meanwhile, organizations under the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation in traditional medicine. As a result, collaboration is expected to expand across research, policy development, and capacity building in the sector.
