Shanghai's West Bund plans to create "Olympic venues without walls" for the 2028 Olympic Q-Series.

The waterfront along the Huangpu River in Xuhui district will host a two?month urban sports carnival surrounding the event, which is scheduled from May 11 to 14, 2028.

West Bund's experience hosting the FISE World Series Shanghai for two consecutive years provided a key reference for the International Olympic Committee in evaluating the area as a potential host for the Olympic Q-Series.

As the largest extreme sports gathering worldwide, FISE World Series Shanghai achieved Hallmark event status under the "Shanghai Sports" brand event system within just two years of its launch. The event generated nearly 400 million yuan ($58.82 million) in direct economic benefits and more than 1 billion yuan in wider ripple effects.

Beyond major competitions, West Bund has also hosted events such as the 2026 Outdoor Innovation and Design Exhibition and SIU FEST, a sports and lifestyle carnival.

According to Pan Yaonan, assistant general manager of Shanghai West Bund Exhibition, nearly 20 public sports facilities and spaces have been built in the West Bund area, including a skateboarding park, a multi?purpose sports zone, and pump tracks.

The skateboarding park in the northern section of West Bund is set to reopen in July 2026 following upgrades.

In the southern part of the waterfront, the FISEHOOD Extreme Sports Park serves as the starting point for further expansion, revitalizing urban resources and accelerating the rollout of sports facilities along the Huangpu River’s southern section.

West Bund will also develop a new sports park covering approximately 17,000 square meters. By integrating the space beneath Xupu Bridge with the West Bund Nature Art Park, the project aims to host professional sporting events while providing everyday sports and leisure access for residents.
