A tourist who suddenly collapsed at a crowded street concert in Central China was stretchered into an ambulance within three minutes after police, medics and thousands of bystanders coordinated to clear a rescue route through the packed venue, local authorities said.

The incident occurred on May 3 during a balcony concert on Wuyi Road in Shashi district of Jingzhou, Hubei province, amid a crowd of nearly 20,000 revelers who had gathered for May Day holiday celebrations.

Wu Shihua, a local resident who witnessed the rescue efforts, said the man lost consciousness in the middle of the dense crowd, however bystanders did not panic.

Police officers on duty quickly spotted the emergency and alerted medical workers to the scene, while nearby visitors spontaneously stepped aside to widen an emergency passage for rescuers.

"When we discovered the situation, we immediately contacted medical staff and brought them to the scene," said Pei Zhihong, head of the counterterrorism and special police brigade under the Shashi branch of Jingzhou Public Security Bureau. "After the stretcher arrived, police officers and medics worked together to carry the patient into the ambulance. The whole process took less than three minutes."

Zhou Shiping, a doctor from Guanju Health Center, said the clinic activated its emergency response system immediately and coordinated with Jingzhou First People's Hospital before transferring the patient.

"When we arrived, the patient looked pale and his limbs were cold," Zhou said. "We quickly placed him on a stretcher and sent him to the hospital for further treatment."

The tourist is now in stable condition, authorities said.

Officials said the rapid rescue reflected extensive safety planning ahead of the holiday surge. Public security authorities and local subdistrict offices had conducted multiple drills and established emergency corridors before the event.

During the holiday period, authorities deployed 165 police officers, 60 militia members and 100 community volunteers daily at the venue, alongside drone patrols and crowd-control teams.

Wu added the rescue also depended on the calm cooperation of ordinary visitors.

"No one pushed or crowded around," said Ding Yi, a community worker on duty nearby. "Everyone seemed to understand immediately and made way for the rescue team."

Yang Mei, Party secretary of Jingjiangting community in Jiefang subdistrict, said the rescue reflected the calmness and kindness of both residents and visitors. "It was a vivid example of the city's civic spirit," she said, adding that authorities would continue improving services and safety measures for tourists.
