The tree is a tall deciduous species, reaching heights of 15 to 25 meters. It naturally blooms from April to May, with bracts that start off light green and gradually transition to milky white. From August to October, the tree enters its fruiting period, producing elongated, ovoid drupes in a purplish-green hue.
The species is primarily found in the high-altitude mountainous forests of Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, and Guizhou provinces, as well as regions like Dali and Gongshan in Yunnan province.
