A logistics park linking Dongguan's manufacturing base directly to Hong Kong International Airport's cargo operations has processed more than 65 billion yuan ($9.42 billion) in import and export value in the three years since cross-border freight volumes rebounded following the end of Covid-era restrictions.

The Dongguan-Hong Kong International Airport Logistics Park, located in Guangdong province's Dongguan Humen Port Comprehensive Bonded Area some 70 kilometers from Hong Kong, began operations on May 18, 2023. Huangpu Customs said Tuesday the park had recorded an average annual growth rate of 217 percent over the period.

The park handles goods across more than 1,500 categories and serves over 2,000 enterprises in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, according to the Huangpu Customs statement.

Its core innovation is a cross-border sea-air intermodal arrangement that extends Hong Kong airport functions to Dongguan, including aviation security screening, cargo build-up, and tallying. Shipments cleared in Dongguan can be loaded directly onto aircraft upon arrival in Hong Kong without repeated security checks or re-palletization.

"Previously, goods from Dongguan bound for Hong Kong International Airport were generally transported by land," said Xiao Zhiliang, deputy general manager of Dongguan Port International Air Transport. Now, he said, the airport has effectively been brought to the doorstep of local manufacturers.

Approximately 80 percent of Dongguan's air cargo is distributed via Hong Kong International Airport, which handled 5.07 million metric tons in 2025, earning the title of the world's busiest cargo airport for the 14th consecutive year, according to Airports Council International.

The intermodal link has also opened new import channels. Since March, Shatian Customs has supervised 12 batches of imported Spanish bluefin tuna arriving by air at Hong Kong and reaching Dongguan via cold-chain sea transport within seven hours.
