Spending over a year in systematic comparisons with similar species reported from various regions across the world, the research team confirmed that this species exhibits significant morphological differences from all previously reported species within the same genus, marking it as a new species that is not yet recorded globally.

The Tryblionella chongmingensis is a critical primary producer and foundation for the entire food chain involving plankton, fish, birds, and many more. It is an important feed for aquatic life and is expected to generate significant economic value in the future.

Situated within the Yangtze River estuary, Chongming Island is on its way to becoming a world-class eco-friendly island. It is the third-largest island in China and the world's largest alluvial island. Surrounded by riverine and marine waters, it boasts an extensive internal river network. The predominant nature of its aquatic bodies is brackish, which plays a crucial role in supporting diverse biological communities.
