Vietnam's top leader To Lam wrapped up his four-day state visit to China on Friday, a trip that analysts said will help enhance the traditional friendship and strategic connectivity between the two socialist neighbors.

A joint statement released on Friday described the visit by To Lam, who is general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and the Vietnamese president, as "a complete success", highlighting that "a sound development of China-Vietnam relations holds strategic, holistic and historic significance".

Following his meetings with President Xi Jinping, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, and other Chinese leaders on Wednesday in Beijing, To Lam embarked on a remarkable journey the next day, traveling more than 2,400 kilometers on a high-speed train to Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

In around 10 hours, he experienced firsthand China's vast territory, its advanced infrastructure, and the momentum of its modernization drive.

The visit to Nanning was not the first time To Lam experienced China's high-speed train. Upon his arrival in Beijing on Tuesday, he boarded a high-speed train to visit the Xiong'an New Area in Hebei province to learn about the project that holds national significance.

The two trips fully demonstrate his keen interest in China's high-speed railway development, a Xinhua News Agency report said.

During the trip to Nanning, To Lam toured the driver's cabin, observing high-speed train operations up close.

According to the Xinhua report, he praised China's railway achievements as deeply impressive and noted that only a few countries in the world are capable of operating railway services at an altitude of 4,000 meters.

Since launching its high-speed railway service in 2008, China has built the world's largest high-speed railway network, accounting for over 70 percent of the global total. According to national plans, China's high-speed railway network is expected to reach 70,000 kilometers by 2035.

To Lam's itinerary closely aligns with his focus on connectivity and his willingness to prioritize railway cooperation as part of pragmatic cooperation with China during his visit, Ge Hongliang, vice-dean of the College of ASEAN Studies at Guangxi Minzu University, was quoted as saying by Global Times.

It could provide a reference for Vietnam's domestic infrastructure development, China-Vietnam cross-border rail links, and the long-term planning of the Pan-Asia Railway, Ge said.

On Sunday, Vietnam started the construction of its first high-speed railway, a 120-kilometer line linking Hanoi, Bac Ninh province, Hai Phong city and Quang Ninh province, with a maximum design speed of 350 kilometers per hour, according to Vietnamese media outlet VnExpress.

On Friday morning in Nanning, To Lam visited the China-ASEAN Countries Artificial Intelligence Application Cooperation Center, where he tried on a pair of translation glasses powered by AI and learned more about the development of the technology.

He also attended a youth exchange event at Guangxi University, where over 800 youth representatives from China and Vietnam gathered to promote exchanges and foster friendship.

While addressing a grand get-together in Nanning, attended by around 500 Chinese and Vietnamese people from all walks of life, To Lam encouraged people from both countries to transform the power of traditional friendship into tangible and effective cooperative outcomes, and advance collaboration to a deeper and more practical level.

He said the enduring power of the "comrades-plus-brothers" relationship between Vietnam and China originated from the joint efforts of the older generation of leaders; is rooted in the traditional friendship between the two peoples; benefits from the strategic guidance of leaders of both parties and countries; and is demonstrated in increasing outcomes of deep and pragmatic cooperation.

In the joint statement released on Friday, the two countries agreed to accelerate the alignment of their development strategies and expedite the connectivity of railway, highway and port infrastructure, highlighting railway cooperation as a new focus of strategic cooperation.

They agreed to uphold free and open trade and investment, and jointly build secure and stable industrial and supply chains, according to the statement. A working group for industrial and supply chain cooperation will be established to promote enhanced collaboration in this area, it added.
