A Chinese defense spokesperson on Friday has accused the Democratic Progressive Party authorities in Taiwan of distorting and hyping up Chinese military activities and stirring up war anxiety.

During an online news briefing, Ministry of National Defense spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang said that "Taiwan independence" is the main culprit in undermining peace across the Taiwan Strait.

Zhang made the remarks in response to a report released by Taiwan's security authorities, which hyped the so-called "Chinese mainland threat".

It claimed that the People's Liberation Army aircraft had made more than 420 flights around Taiwan island in the first quarter of this year, while saying joint combat-readiness patrols by PLA vessels and aircraft were carried out 10 times.

Zhang reiterated that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, noting that the PLA's training and exercise activities around the island are entirely justified, reasonable and legitimate, as they are aimed at safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He said the DPP's distortion and hype over the PLA's actions aimed at intimidating people on the island and creating confrontation across the Strait, adding that their attempts are entirely politically motivated.

"Taiwan independence" is the main culprit in undermining peace across the Taiwan Strait, the spokesman said, expressing hope that Taiwan compatriots will fully recognize the extreme danger and harm of separatism and join efforts to firmly combat "Taiwan independence" forces.

He also called on Taiwan compatriots to take concrete actions to safeguard their own security and well-being, promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, and protect the common homeland of the Chinese nation.

The spokesman also criticized recent collusion between United States lawmakers and the DPP island authorities led by Lai Ching-te.

According to media reports, in recent days, some US Congress members have visited Taiwan, where they urged the Taiwan's regional legislature to pass a special military budget as soon as possible. According to the reports, Lai expressed gratitude and advocated US-Taiwan military cooperation.

Zhang said Lai, in pursuit of "Taiwan independence" for selfish gain, is using the hard-earned money of Taiwan's people to curry favor with and cling to the US, calling it ruinous to Taiwan and accelerating the island's slide toward the danger of conflict.

"Some people in the US are squeezing Taiwan dry, with no regard for whether the island is truly safe," he said.

"What they really care about is whether they can make more money, even profits from war."

He warned the DPP authorities that seeking "independence" by relying on the US will not bring security, and resisting reunification by force amounts to digging their own grave.

"We urge the US to immediately stop all forms of military contact with China's Taiwan region, stop sending wrong signals to 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces, and stop undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait," he said.
