China National Geography is one of China's most authoritative and influential geography and travel magazines. Its recommendations are based on multiple dimensions, including cultural heritage, seasonal landscapes, visitor comfort, and intangible cultural heritage (ICH) experiences.
Pingyao Ancient City boasts over 300 historical sites and buildings, nearly 4,000 well-preserved Ming and Qing residences, and historical relics like city walls, the county government office, and ancient draft banks. It is hailed as a "living sample" for the study of ancient Chinese cities.
Visitors to Pingyao Ancient City can enjoy sweeping springtime views from atop the city walls, stroll along South Street to experience the culture of Shanxi merchants, and take part in intangible cultural heritage crafts such as lacquerware and paper cutting. They can also savor local specialties like Pingyao beef and traditional bowl dishes, immersing themselves in the poetic charm of this northern ancient city at a leisurely pace.
Alongside Pingyao Ancient City, the other four ancient cities featured are Shouxian in Anhui province, Yarkant in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, Shigatse in Xizang autonomous region, and Langzhong in Sichuan. Industry experts note that this list provides the public with culturally rich travel options for the spring season.
