Sino-German joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive has launched two new initiatives to support wetland conservation in Liaoning province, extending its environmental footprint in Northeast China.

The latest moves, unveiled last week, include a donation to Liaozhong Puhe National Wetland Park in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning, and continued backing for the Liaohekou National Nature Reserve in Panjin, marking the fifth consecutive year of support for the coastal wetland.

The projects reflect the carmaker's long-standing "In China, for China, with China" approach and its parallel focus on economic and ecological development in Liaoning.

The initiatives build on the BMW Beautiful Homeland program, introduced in 2021, under which BMW Brilliance has concentrated on biodiversity protection at Liaohekou, a temperate coastal wetland of global ecological significance.

At Liaozhong Puhe National Wetland Park, a mixed ecosystem of rivers, marshes and constructed wetlands, the carmaker is working with the China Green Foundation to implement restoration and public engagement measures.

These include replanting native aquatic vegetation such as reeds and lotus to rehabilitate water systems, rolling out environmental education programs for local communities, and promoting co-governance mechanisms to integrate conservation into everyday life.

Meanwhile, at Liaohekou National Nature Reserve, BMW Brilliance will continue to focus on water resource management, protection of flagship species such as red-crowned cranes and Saunders's gulls, and science-based environmental education.

Wetlands, often described as the "kidneys of the Earth", play a critical role in flood control, water purification and biodiversity conservation.

Since 2021, BMW Brilliance has donated more than 15 million yuan ($2.17 million) through the BMW Beautiful Homeland initiative to support wetland protection projects at Liaohekou and the Yellow River Delta, reaching over 30 million beneficiaries.

The program has also drawn recognition from the International Union for Conservation of Nature, which described it as a pioneering corporate initiative in China's biodiversity conservation, citing its impact on ecosystem protection, public awareness and protected-area management.

The carmaker's approach reflects a broader shift from traditional philanthropy toward deeper participation in ecological governance, in line with Liaoning's updated wetland protection framework.

BMW Brilliance positions sustainability as a core element of its long-term strategy, spanning emissions reduction across its industrial value chain as well as continued investment in environmental and social initiatives.
