KMT chairwoman’s visit to the mainland aims to strengthen cross-Strait relations, spokeswoman says
A Chinese mainland spokeswoman said on Wednesday that the upcoming visit of Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of the Chinese Kuomintang, to the mainland meets the needs of cross-Strait relations and serves the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation.
Zhang Han, spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, described the trip as an important component of exchanges between the Communist Party of China and the KMT under the new circumstances.
According to Zhang, enhanced dialogue between the CPC and the KMT will have a positive and far-reaching impact on maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and advancing the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations. Cheng is scheduled to lead a KMT delegation on a visit to Jiangsu province, Shanghai, and Beijing from April 7 to 12. The trip will mark the first visit by a KMT chairperson to the mainland in a decade.
Zhang said the visit is expected to help guide the development of relations between the two parties and across the Taiwan Strait in the right direction while opening up broader prospects for future engagement. "It reflects the responsibility and commitment of both the KMT and the CPC to promote peace in the Taiwan Strait, enhance the well-being of compatriots on both sides, and advance national rejuvenation," she said.
Zhang added that the mainland attaches great importance to the visit and will make appropriate arrangements for all related activities. She also emphasized that the Chinese mainland stands ready to work with political parties, organizations, and people from all sectors in Taiwan, including the KMT, on the shared political basis of upholding the 1992 Consensus and opposing "Taiwan independence", to deepen exchanges, maintain positive interactions, and promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations for the benefit of people on both sides.
