More than 500 cycling enthusiasts from China and abroad gathered in Shangxi town, Yiwu, on March 29 for the opening race of the 2026 Belt and Road Diplomats' Cycling Series.
The event, featuring categories including men's and women's road races, a diplomat group, and a leisure ride, attracted participants from over 50 countries, including diplomats and international students. The 26-kilometer road course and 14-km leisure route passed through scenic landmarks such as peach blossom groves, historic halls, and rural landscapes, offering riders an immersive view of the region's beauty.
Moldovan Ambassador to China Petru Frunze praised the experience, highlighting the blend of lakes, villages, and spring blossoms along the route.
Approved by China's sports authorities, the series is a key platform for people-to-people exchange under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Now in its fourth year, the 2026 season will span six cities across China.
The Yiwu leg also included cultural visits for foreign diplomats, showcasing the city's dynamic trade sector and digital transformation, reinforcing its reputation as the "world's supermarket".
