March 17, 2026

The Wuhan University Durham University Joint Institute is unveiled on March 16.

The Wuhan University Durham University Joint Institute was launched on March 16, marking a significant milestone in Sino-British higher education collaboration.

Dominic McAllister, British Consul General in Wuhan, emphasized the rich heritage of British higher education and the abundant academic resources available in Hubei, identifying the vast potential for collaboration in faculty and student exchanges, research, professional development, and educational innovation.

He expressed confidence that the institute will help drive technological innovation and broaden students' global perspectives, fostering opportunities for youth development and international research collaboration.

Zhu Kongjun, Party secretary of Wuhan University, underscored the institute's mission to nurture new generations with solid knowledge, patriotism, innovative abilities, and a global perspective.

Karen O'Brien, vice-chancellor of Durham University, praised the enduring partnership between the two universities. Since signing a Memorandum of Understanding in 2018, the two institutions have strengthened their relationship and forged strong bonds through academic exchanges and discussions.

O'Brien highlighted the complementary strengths of Wuhan University and Durham University, both top-tier research institutions with similar academic goals and philosophies.

She reaffirmed Durham University's commitment to providing high-quality faculty, curriculum systems, and research resources to establish a model of Sino-foreign cooperative education.

The event also featured the signing of the Cooperation Agreement on Seedcorn Funds for the joint institute and a forum on the high-quality development of Sino-foreign cooperative education.

The institute plans to begin enrolling students this year, offering six undergraduate programs: Geophysics, Geography, Smart Water Conservancy, Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Automation, Electronic Information Engineering, and Electrical Engineering and Automation, with an initial intake of 350 students.

The "4+0" training model, dual registration, and joint teaching by faculty from both universities will enable graduates to receive degrees from both institutions.
