First Olympic medal for Turkmenistan
Turkmen weightlifter Polina Guryeva won a silver medal in under 59 kg category at the Tokyo Olympics to make history for the country as the first Turkmen Olympic medal winner.
The 22-year-old sportswoman lifted 96 kg in the snatch, 121 kg in the clean and jerk with a total lift of 217 kg to secure 2nd place.
The gold medal was won by Kuo Hsing-Chun from Chinese Taipei, who established two Olympic records – in clean and jerk and with an overall lift - 236 kg (103+133).
Bronze awards went to representative of Japan Mikiko Andoh with result of 214 kg (94+120).
Turkmen athletes will compete in the following disciplines:
July 31: Weight-lifter Rejepbay Rejepov will compete in under 81kg category.
August 2: Hammer thrower Mergen Mammedov will show up.
August 3: Weight-lifter Ovez Ovezov will compete in under 109 kg category
August 4: Weight-lifter Hojamuhammet Toichiev who will compete in over 109 kg category.
