Hospital performs successful operation on 106-year-old
A Shanghai hospital successfully operated on a 106-year-old person using general anesthesia on August 9.
Surnamed Fang, the elderly was diagnosed with pyogenic cholangitis, a disease of the digestive system that is especially dangerous for elderly people, at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine-Ruijin Hospital.
"Because the patient is an elderly who was in poor physical condition and had a high fever, the risk of surgery, especially with the use of anesthesia, was very high," said Fan Rong, the doctor-in-charge of the digestive department of Ruijin Hospital.
According to a representative of Ruijing Hospital, Fang is the oldest patient the hospital's digestive department has ever operated on.
The patient made a full recovery just one week after the operation.
