Sedan drivers in Beijing may be forced to pay a toll for driving on the heavy-traffic roads as the capital vows to make public transport 50 percent of the total traffic by 2015, chinanews.com reported on Friday.

The capital announced its "Green Beijing" program Thursday, saying it will charge vehicles a road toll at heavy-traffic sections, without providing any details.

The plan also encourages residents to take zero-emission transportations and promote both public and private new-energy vehicles to make the number 40,000 by 2015.

Duan Liren, a vice director of the local transportation authority, said it was not hard on a technical level to charge vehicle on toll roads. But it still needs longterm research on charge measures, range and people.

Some residents voiced their opinions on the issue, for example, on the over-crowded second and third ring roads, the authority should ban cars from the roads with only the driver, charge sedans with one passenger, and all vehicles free of charge with more than two passengers.
